Conan is the unwitting heir to the throne of Evenheim, son of the missing king Felix Renaud, and a Noble. As a Noble, Conan has the power to command Magicians in binding Obligations, permitting them the use of magic but restraining their free will. Raised ignorant of his power, Conan is loathe to use it and would prefer to stay home, far from magic and monarchies. Unfortunately for him, he's already far more entrenched in the plot than he knows.

Din is the son of a Magician guildmaster and currently the head Court Magician of the Cymarian monarchy, the right-hand man of the late king of Cymaria. Despite his high rank in the court, Din claims his goal is to overthrow the monarchy and kidnapped Conan in pursuit of that goal.
He appears to have some connection to Conan's father, Felix Renaud, although he's unwilling to share much of his backstory. Whatever happened between them, Din is out for revenge against Noble—particularly Felix—and is known as "The Regicide" in some circles.
